Issues Paper Reflection

This paper was by far the hardest! As with the other two papers I was very grateful for the staggered deadlines it made the paper not seem not so overwhelming. I really liked being able to pick my own topic and research. Getting the MLA format perfect was stressful for me! I spent a lot of time pouring over the penguin book and online looking for where to put a period! It was a pain but I think and hope it is going to pay off when my grade comes out!

Also totally random but while I write my papers I always listen to music in the background and this particular song was on like 45 times while I was writing this paper! Maybe it was subconsciously giving me hope that I would one day finish this paper so enjoy! SO GLAD TO BE DONE WITH THIS PAPER!

Old Spice | Scent Vacation

This commercial is hilarious! I decided to outline it's appeal to women since I think that is the general audience for this.

The intro starts in the classic Old Spice fashion by Saying, "Hello Ladies." and grabs the attention of the audience by using physical appeals.

The main points are that you can use it anywhere and it will take you to your happy place wherever that may be!

The conclusion ends with him sitting on a piano with fondue! This commercial does a good job of appealing to women! Women are the ones who probably buy their husbands deodorant. This is why I think that this is catered towards women.

Thesis

Reality TV unites the societies by appealing to emotions felt by all humans, making comical situations, and being entertaining.

Should I use one show as a specific and then spin off into the different directions using the one show? Or use different shows for examples?

Brainstorming for topics for the Issues paper

When writing this paper I am still confused why it is called Issues paper. I think I am missing something! What is the issue? This is the idea that instantly came to my mind during class.
Keep in mind that these are totally ideas for the paper. Nothing is final!

Reality TV and Globalization:
This relates to globalization because through the TV and Internet societies have become integrated on different levels. The Bachelor for example is popular not only in our nation but is also popular abroad especially in the UK. It connects us with those in other countries besides our own. Other TV shows such as American Idol or So you think you can Dance have an American version and then there is other versions in different countries. Australia has a So you think you can Dance. Because the TV shows are shown in different countries they integrate our society. People also know across the world who differently celebrities are because of reality TV.

I don't know if this topic is good or not!

Reflection on the RA process

Once again I really liked the process by which we did the paper. I liked having several drafts due weeks before the actual paper is due. This process has made me realize that I would turn in a rough draft for another class as a final paper. My papers are so much better when I have had time to work on the original draft. Maybe for future papers in other classes I will make rough draft deadlines for myself.

As far as the paper goes, I really liked being able to pick my own topic in the book. Because we were encouraged by Chris to read and reread the article, I must have read that article about 20 times! At first I thought it was really well done, and then as I continued to read it I realized that it was not a good article at all. The audience that the authors were trying to appeal to were confusing and overall it didn't appeal to logos, ethos, or pathos well at all. This paper also really helped to to grasp the concepts of theses broad terms. Because I had to deeply analyze them in my paper I understand them a lot better then I did before! Overall I really liked the process of writing this paper and look forward to seeing my grade!

Figurative Language In "Think Globally, Eat locally"

I had a hard time finding figurative language in this essay because it is more of a list then anything but here is what I managed to find!

Rhetorical Question:
"For what" -when discussing transporting junk food.

Overstatment:
The essay mentions in a sarcastic way that "salad lovers" shouldn't worry worry about not having veggies during the winter months because you can grow almost ANYTHING indoors now a days.

Allusion:
The essay talks alludes to America's Obesity problem several times.

I know these are short but the essay is pretty short and like I said before it is more of a list!

Thesis Statement

My thesis statement for my paper is going to tentatively look like this:

"Think Globally, Eat Locally" is an effective argument to convince the human race to minimize their human activity because it uses, logical, easy, and effective ways to create an way we can make a difference as individuals.

Still needs some revising but I think I am on to something!

Globe Book Response

I am a little confused as to the blog post assignment so here is what I think Cherise was talking about!

First of all the article that I have chosen is "Think Globally, Eat Locally"

In answer to the questions that she gave in class about knowing the audience in the article that we have chosen to write the rhetoric analysis essays on:

Audience:
Everyone who eats food! But I think it is directed mainly towards American consumers.

Current and/or contemporary events of importance:
The environment deteriorating, so I guess this will always be a contemporary issue!

Professional/race/age/socioeconomic status:
OK this question I think is a little redundant of the first but I guess that all professions, races, etc should be concerned with this issue, because it sounds as though it is a global issue.

Ideologies:
The idea behind this issue that is being discussed is burning fossil fuels and wasting food!

Issues of Importance:
Food is essential to life so that is the importance and fossil fuels are how we get around!

Opponents (real and perceived):
People who don't care about the environment, and time is also an opponent.

Major fears/worries:
That "human activity" is going to destroy the planet!

Opinion Editorial

I liked the Opinion Editorial, mostly because it taught me how to write a paper properly. I know I have said this in class a lot but I really liked having due dates because it forced me to write the essay on time and then I had loads of time to edit. I think before I would write the essay sometimes early and then I wouldn't look at it again. This forced me to write rewrite and edit I feel like it made my paper a lot better!

I think this will really benefit me for the rest of the course!

I really liked the peer review sessions that we did. I liked the input I got, I also liked reading it aloud to them, because it made me visualize my readers more! The way that we are writing this essay step by step is making me like writing essays! Because It is easier to do it step by step then to procrastinate until the night before the essay is due and hash it all out. This is really helping me! I also hope that I was of some use to Taylor and future peers that I review their papers for!

Trust In Provo

Ok so my blog post today is inspired by my apartment shopping that I did tonight. I went south of campus because that is where I have heard the single life is the best, so I am south of campus shopping and all the lease offices are closed because it was about 8 o'clock at night. My friend says that we should knock on peoples doors and see if they let us in. So we go to the Elms and knock on a random apartments and ask if we can look around. They said yes and let us have free rein; they didn't escort us around they were just like, "Yeah sure no problem look around and let me know if i can answer any questions you have." Translate in my head "Yeah sure no problem come in, look at my stuff, take whatever and let me know if you need help finding my jewelry."

This is so intersting and irresponsible to me! The trust on this campus is scary! People need to realize that things get stolen, people get hurt in the real world outside of the "bubble." I think that it's great we feel safe here but people will and do take advantage of that mindset.

I could have easily taken so many things tonight from peoples apartments (creepy thought)! At other colleges they don't just let people in to "take a look around." I was amazed at how trust is so prevalent that I think it is an issue! I don't know what to do about it, but this is just what was on my mind!

Get Ready for it!

So I have decided to go with my free T-Shirt idea! I know some (including myself) were worried that I wouldn't have enough to write about but I going to attempt it, because my best papers are my most light-hearted papers!

Ok so free T-shirts! My object in writing this essay is to convince students to go to events for free t-shirts because they make someone look involved in their community and they also add to a comfy wardrobe. It is also to convince the people running these events to endorse the event by making free t-shirts. I have tons of free t-shirts that I love to wear everyday! They are modest and make a good layer to any weather of the season. These are the shirts that you don't mind getting dirty! The way to get an event populated is to make a flier advertising that there will be free t-shirts at the event!

This is what I have so far, way in the beginning stages!

What to write about?!

Brainstorming is the hardest step in the paper writing process for me! I feel lost when I am sitting at my desk with my laptop on microsoft word and watching the line keep blinking! I want something amazing to come out of my head and onto that paper, something that people read and think, "Wow what an amazing perspective." Unfortunely this rarely happens, maybe with this paper it will start to change!

Ok so brainstorming! I am just going to try something new and put my complete thought process in this post. Possiblities for my paper based on intersets would be: fencing, horses, movies, free-shirts, Taylor Swift, Jack Johnson, the middle east, etc. Which one of these would make a good paper if any of them? I guess the middle east is a pretty broad topic, I want to travel there so bad to expereince the place. I have read so many books on the middle east particually Palestine. What would my opinion be though? I love the idea of traveling there so everyone should? That seems lame. I hate writing papers on big debates, especially political ones like abortion or immigration. I want something that is me.

I like the idea of free T-shirts. If anyone wants me anywhere just tell me there is gonna be a free T-shirt. Seriously at one of the BYU football games it was pouring rain and my friend and I stood in line to get one because it was free and it was a T-shirt! It is such a good way to get a crowd at and event! Could my essay be long enough with that prompt? Seems like I still have a lot of thinking to do before next Friday!

What do to what to do!

I want to do so many things with my life! Occupational wise I want to be a Nurse and work in the ICU or a burn treatment center. My dream is to work or volunteer on one of the US naval like USS Mercy, where the ship goes around the world administering medical care to countries that can’t afford care. The staff of the ship also teaches local doctors and nurses the latest in medical care. Being a part of something like that has always attracted me and I know that it would not only make a difference to the people but also on me. I also want to be mom at some point in my life when I am better situated and more mature and have had a career experience. I think I would be a good mom; I am patient, loving, and responsible.
